I heard on local sports-talk radio today that men believe Southern women to be well informed about college football. True?…maybe, but men never really talk to us about it, do they? Well, here’s a place where we can talk about it, ask the questions, show our knowledge and even, our ignorance. We’re gonna make it through this college football season... Read the story »

Hello Ladies! It’s your turn to do the questioning again. Several special guests have agreed to submit to an interview and answer the questions you have on your mind. So start thinkin’ about what you’d like to ask our guests. Just so you know, here are the expertise areas of our guests slated thus far:
- An SEC offensive lineman who also wears a Dallas Cowboy SuperBowl ring
- A wildly sucessful SEC woman who works as the right hand to a prominent University Athletic Director
- A SEC team kicker with a very unique college kicking record
Okay, lets take advantage of this unique opportunity and send in your questions via our “Comment” options. We’ll combine them and I’ll make the call! I am already covered up with little colored “sticky notes” filled with ideas. And, don’t worry there will be more quests to come…just as soon as I can beg my way into their good graces. I’ll start working on that.

All over the Southeast this past week folks were keeping vigil at the front door in anticipation of the revered arrival of the “season ticket package”. All trips to the grocery store, visits to relatives, and even “back to school sale” shopping sprees were moved off the stove and we sat tight. I for one, had a fresh pitcher of pink lemonade all prepared (complete with insulated “go” cup) for the UPS man and waiting in the fridge. Last year, I violated personal protocol not to mention good horse sense and hugged the gentleman during a lapse in judgment. So I planned ahead, being alerted by my reliable internet tracking system that the package was on its way. This system proved ideal for me and I will make a note to follow the package’s progress in just this same way next year.
The moment was certainly exciting and the UPS man seemed pleased with the lemonade albeit a tad bit shocked. I told him of course, that he would have found last year even more so…
Carefully un-wrapping the package, I pulled out the 2010 tickets and checked to make certain that we still had our same seats, that everything we ordered was indeed included. For a moment I was walking through the turnstiles of my football obsessed mind and entering that stadium I love with all my heart. It was a solid feeling, knowing that all over the Southeast folks just like me were doing the very same thing. Getting revved up for their own team and being able to see the end of a long drought, they rejoiced with me that we could stop talking about what “could” happen, put aside all predictions and speculation and embark on a new season.
Perhaps you, like me have counted down since last February and now your pulse quickens to see that there are only 19 days until the kick off of College Football 2010.

‘Hope Reggie’s folks are enjoying their home. Here is the official document listing all the sanctions imposed on USC(Click here).
Many Southern Fans have watched in disbelief as USC appeared to escape the fateful fist of the NCAA, time and time again. Honestly, I didn’t really expect this time to be any different and am surprised to learn of the extensive sanctions that have been imposed. Its not really that I dislike USC, its just that I feel that “what’s good for one, oughta be good for the others”. In that way, I suppose I am pleased.
Further, it amazes me that little Lane and his band of merry men are once again, at the center of a controversial discussion. But there again, he was at USC when the violations occurred. Just desserts?? Maybe, but with Kiffin there always seems to be more to the story. ‘Wonder what we’ll learn next?

Hello Friends! I thought you might like to know that Spring Football is underway all over the US of A. New recruits are waiting in the wings to step in and some have enrolled early at their respective schools to get a head start on the 2010 Season. Coaches are trying out new players at predictable and unpredictable positions and spring inter-squad game dates have been set. The faithful will soon assemble and give their 2010 teams a “once over”!
Right now, we’re hearing a lot about NCAA Basketball, “brackets” and the equity/inequity(depending on your perspective about your team) of the seed results for this year’s tourney. I listen to all the basketball talk just enough to draw the conclusion that I don’t really care. Of course, we want to see our Southern teams do well, but its hard to “get up” for basketball, you know?
Counting down until the KICK-OFF of the 2010 COLLEGE FOOTBALL SEASON, I am pleased to tell you that there are only…….
170 days to go!

Well, its just hit me today. There is no more football. I know it’s Valentine’s day and that has been very nice. However, I turned on ESPN and it featured that delightful sport, Pro-Bowling.
Football recruiting news is over, National Signing day is past, new coaches have been hired and most new coaches have assembled their staffs. The Super Bowl actually had my interest this year and I was tickled to death for the Saints and the win for the City of New Orleans. But today, just one week later there is grid-iron silence.
I tried basketball yesterday…even went to the Arkansas/Alabama game. Then, I watched a bit of the Tennessee/Kentucky game and cheered for the underdog (UT), but they lost handily.
If you are desperate for college football news (like me), you might try Rivals Radio on Sirius Satelite. They are talking a bit about the Big 10′s plan to expand by adding another team. Texas is being considered. And, try JOX 94.5 in Birmingham from 10:00-2:00 weekdays, because although they will likely discuss basketball, they tend to speak about college football fairly regularly. But even then it is either old news or speculation about next year, etc. Don’t get me wrong; I’m glad they’re there, but its just not filling the void.
I may try reading. Perhaps a book about dogs having “souls” that I received for Christmas. My husband gave me a “how to” Spanish course on CD-ROM so that’s an option. I could memorize some more college football referee hand signals; that would be useful. The Thomas Kincade jigsaw puzzle from Christmas 2008 is laid out on the dining table-too many colors. There is promise of snow tonight; however, it is 47 degrees and I can’t see how that will happen.
It’s just the college football season withdrawal blues. Heaven knows I do get a bit obsessed about the whole deal. Maybe this will be a character builder for me; a time to expand my horizons, branch out and grow personally. That might be a good idea.
203 days till the kick off of College Football 2010.
By Charlsa, on February 4th, 2010
February 3, 2010 is in the books. According to 3 major recruiting services, 3 or 4 (varies with the service) Southern teams have finished with the Top Five rankings. Florida seems to be the crowned “king” this year, taking players that were recruited and signed letters of intent during the Gator’s 2009 reign as National Champs. The Alabama faithful are hoping that their turn at the helm as 2010 National Champions will bring them the same good fortune in 2011.
The biggest surprise however, is coming from the State of Alabama’s “other” University…Auburn. The coaching staff there infused their January ’09 start with enthusiasm and a few gimmicks that have sure paid in spades for them. They have finished well ahead of their in-state rivals in Tuscaloosa with a recruiting class that is outstanding. Auburn’s lack of depth on last year’s roster, has afforded AU the ability to promise outstanding freshman recruits immediate playing time-a carrot that turned out to be quite attractive to these kids. The in-state squabbling has been heated all day, with Auburn devotees claiming much more than a “Moral Victory” over the Crimson Tiders.
If you are interested in reading more about these rankings, three links are provided below. Now, if you are wondering just HOW these ranking services calculate their ratings, you are not alone. The Rivals site is granted the prize for being the most complex.
What does it mean? Well, it means that the universities listed got a bounty of young high school players that are estimated to be great. This is of course, based on their performance in high school. Now, the job of “coaching them up” becomes the factor defining their long-term worth. Some would say that here is where the value of good coaching takes over. They would point to programs that consistently gain good “talent”, but rarely achieve at the level of expectation.
At any rate, we shall see what the recruiting ranking REALLY means. But we won’t see for quite a while.
There are 214 days until the Kick Off of College Football 2010.

I am the first to admit that I am HORRIBLE at predictions, but this is one that I feel pretty safe making…. There is no way that Lane Kiffen goes unscathed into the annals of College Football Happy Land!!
He has left an unsightly ring on grandma’s antique coffee table in every living room he’s ever visited. He immediately insulted his coaching peers in the SEC after his hiring and continued to show no respect for his conference and commissioner. Al Davis fired him and had some unkind words to say-I know, consider the source, but he may be smarter than we thought. Norm Chow demanded an apology before even discussing the USC Offensive Coordinator position. He associates himself with characters like Ed Ogeron who knows no bounds when trying to get a recruit on the roster and who BRAGS about recruiting players who are “no angels” . And, he gets “play time” with stand-up citizens like Lil’Wayne.
I think UT is at fault for hiring him. I don’t fault him for leaving for a better job, but how could Mike Garrett think that he’d do anything at SC that deviates from the trail he’s already left?
My Southern Baptist grandmother’s “southernisms” apply here: “Be sure you sins will find you out” and “Pretty is, as Pretty does”…..

Really, it has been a great year for our Southern teams. However, it has not been without difficulty and even, tragedy. Players have been shot, stabbed and in trouble legally. Coaches have behaved in ways “unbecoming”, made poor choices, gotten themselves fired and some have been highly stressed. Players threw punches and poked eyes. Officials became over-zealous in handing out personal foul penalties and some were reprimanded. The inevitable end-of –the-year coaching upheavals have caused considerable pain in a couple of circles and as my mama would say, it’s just been “tacky”.
But on the “sparkly side”, two Southern teams went all the way to the National Championship game in Pasadena. Right there in beautiful So Cal, Texas, #2 and Alabama, #1 played in the granddaddy of them all, the Rose Bowl. They played for the whole “shebang”, the Crystal football Coaches Trophy and the AP #1 status. What a stellar night it was and what a proud moment for Southern Football! The SEC has won the last 4 BCS National Titles and SEC commissioner, Mike Slive says that we’ve made such a good impression that, “they’re going to want us to come back”. ‘Sounds like a deal in the works to me. I DO love my football. Congratulations to the Alabama Crimson Tide, #1!

National Signing Day is just around the corner – February 3, 2010. This is the day when high school recruits declare their intentions to accept the college football scholarships offered them. Southern Girls “Season”
Well ladies, we did it. Yep, we’ve ended up on the “other side” of the 2009 NCAA Football Season. That long stretch of seemingly endless Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (used to be only Saturdays!) has come to an end. And, it’s an end that leaves SOUTHERN football shining in a very sparkly light. I for one, couldn’t be more proud.
I hope that some of us have learned a thing or two about football – I know I have. Maybe some of us felt a tad bit more interest during those football Saturdays as we gathered around the dip and chips at the foot of the widescreen TV. Some of us have gotten through the “we need a bigger TV” debate or we’ve gone out and just gotten one. Perhaps we have used some of our newfound knowledge at the tailgate party or to impress during dinner conversation. We may have even tuned in to sports radio to see what was being tossed around. The luckiest among us actually got a man to do a double take when we yelled “stay in your lanes!” during kick offs. But mostly, we just found a place to bond in common interest with others who understand our strengths and our shortfalls, where football is concerned – that is.
I am glad you asked your questions here and made your comments and joined me on this football journey. It’s been great fun for me. Thank you for that.
And, by the way….there are 234 days until the kick-off of the 2010 season. We’ll be counting, okay?

Okay, I see it now. I truly have a football problem. I am watching Rutgers and UCF play in the “St. Petersburg Bowl”. It’s just that I don’t like to watch basketball and well, it is the only football on. Actually, I am not complaining because I am just glad there IS one on again.
Since it’s December 19th, we took a family ride to look at Christmas lights. Normally, I like this activity but tonight an evening of seeing inflated blow up Santas and snowmen chasing penguins in front of double-wides in rural Morgan County just didn’t do it for me. So here I am at the TV, feeling relieved and at peace as I watch the beginning of an extensive Bowl Season!!
